Vein Mapping Prior to Surgery

AIMS

To identify the venous anatomy prior to surgery to enable the surgeon to find the area of interst with minimal difficulty.

PATIENT PREPARATION

Upper limb & lower leg veins: no preparation required.

TECHNIQUE

The patient is recumbent. The study is non-invasive and painless and does not involve the injection of any dye. Gel is applied to the skin and the ultrasound probe is moved over the skin of the limb. The study takes approximately 20-30 minutes. Sometimes the technician will draw on the skin as a marker for the surgeon. This  should not be removed prior to surgery.

DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA

B-mode imaging of veins is usually all that is required
